downlow magazine design

For this project, I developed a complete magazine concept for downlow, an art publication focused on lowbrow and non-mainstream contemporary art, with the goal of creating a print experience compelling enough to justify its physical format. I designed the masthead, cover, and a six-page feature article centered on Elizabeth Catlett, highlighting her role in merging art and activism. The layout balances bold typography, archival imagery, and structured negative space to create a refined yet impactful visual system that supports the weight of Catlett’s work. By integrating large-scale quotes, contrasting graphic patterns, and a restrained color palette, the spreads emphasize both historical context and contemporary relevance. The design prioritizes tactile, immersive storytelling—demonstrating how thoughtful editorial design can elevate content in a way that digital formats cannot replicate.
